Illusions Can't Stop Me

Illusions can't hurt me-- not strictly true, actually. Mental illness, low self esteem, intrusive thoughts harm the most when you're convinced they and you are one and the same, that you're what you think rather than how you compartmentalize those thoughts.

The Penrose triangle is an apt visual aid for how contradicting thoughts fit together in our heads, and I'm not the only one holding fast to that perspective. Optical illusions in general remind me of my own troubles, because my troubles are scarcely Tim Burtonesque shadows and hiding in corners with a raincloud overhead. They are persistently perplexing, changing as they repeat themselves. Neither fully differentiating directions, nor committed to our own sense of reason.

And sometimes, they win.
